Thinking Of Building Your Own Home?

Building your own can be a very exciting time. As with anything, it can have it's own pros and cons. It's important to weigh out those differences to make sure it's the right choice for you and your family. Because it should be an enjoyable event, with plenty of perks. Not a lot of people can say they were the first person to step inside a home, first person to use the bathtub, etc!

But again, it's important not to only weigh out the differences, but once you've made the decision to custom your research. There are several elements where surprises may arise and cause time delays and of course cost you more money.

There are a LOT of decisions to be made when building your own home. Everything literally has to be planned from scratch. From the size of doors, colors of walls, types of flooring, to small things like light fixtures.

Most custom home builders Lufkin TX come with basic, yet complete floor plans for you to start with. This is an easy starting point, that will help somewhat limit the decisions you have to make. So with this point, it's vital that you properly research and select an appropriate builder. They will normally all have different styles to help get you started.

Never assume the timeline will be accurate.

Better safe than sorry here. There are so many elements that can come into play that could lengthen the time to build a custom home. Your area and it's rules and guidelines, the builder itself, weather, etc all come into play.

Be on the lookout for shortcuts. Hopefully this was something that was discussed you builder ahead of time, but shortcuts are one of the biggest problems with a custom home build. Both immediately and long term.

And you'll probably end up spending more than you initially anticipated, so budget accordingly. Things can change, visions and ideas can change, which can alter your costs.

Common Plumbing Mistakes

Plumbing repairs are an aspect that almost all of us (well...maybe men) like to think we can do ourselves. And that's probably true for a lot of things. A running toilet is fairly easy to diagnose, and provides plenty of ways to get cheap parts for replacements. And in today's age, you can Google and YouTube basically anything to figure out how to DIY.

But sometimes you're going to need to know more than just some basic plumbing skills. And if you're not 100% sure then there's a 100% chance of making a mistake.

The most common aspect that we have found from our plumber Allen TX sources, is homeowners overtightening connections to the pipes. It's pretty easy to do, and sometimes you don't even realize you're doing it. Some of the fittings and other parts we use will be plastic, so overtightening plastic fittings on your faucet tubes for example can eventually crack and begin to leak. Same with toilets, being made of porcelain you're risking cracking that could destroy the toilet all together.

One thing that a lot of DIYers do reach for the liquid drain cleaner. It's the easiest way to "attempt" to unclog a pipe, but not always the best. Too much liquid drain cleaner, being corrosive, can cause damage to the metal pipes and traps. Or, just think about how much drain cleaner is down in the P-trap if you have to take it apart?

Oh, don't forget...TURN OFF THE WATER! It's important to remember to turn the water off before attempting to replace any valves or pipes. It seems self explanatory...but it happens.

Plenty of other aspects to consider, you need to make sure you have the correct tools and always remember to have the parts ready AND to have spare parts available. If you run into an issue and don't have the proper tools or supplies after you've already begun, you're in trouble.

Long story short, think twice about the issue. If you have experience and know how to resolve a simple plumbing issue...then by all means do it. But consider consulting a professional first, even if it's just online research to see if it's best to try to do it yourself. If there's any hesitation, contact a local plumber and get a quote!
